Something New Is Happening!
After much conversation, thought, and discernment, MISC is re-imagining our Annual Memorial Procession. For the last 18 years, we have joined together to walk, recite the names of our friends who have died homeless in Marin, and celebrate their lives. For the last couple of years, we have noticed that the group joining us in this ritual has grown smaller. I have heard from folks in the street community that they are not showing up for the procession because “the list is just too long,” “it just makes me sad because I know so many of those people,” “it’s just gotten too painful to show up for it.”
So, I have begun conversations with Ritter Center, Homeward Bound of Marin, and The St. Vincent dePaul Society to plan an event in the wintertime to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone before us. This event will coincide with the National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, established in 2012 by the National Healthcare for the Homeless Council. This event is endorsed by the National Coalition on Homelessness and is honored by many homeless service providers around the country.
