Thoughts from the Street

Life Being Homeless Life on the streets as a homeless woman is difficult at times. Especially being pregnant it is extremely difficult. But I always go to my doctor appointments to make sure my baby is doing fine and is healthy as he can be. There are a lot of my friends that protect me and make sure that I am safe and taken care of. I don't go and pan handle people for money so when my friends have money to spare they will either share their food or give me money to get some food. I always go to the dining room in the morning to have breakfast. I wait to eat lunch and get some food for later in the day so I don't go hungry later that night. I get very hungry at night and sometimes I don't get anything to eat. I go to bed hungry some nights because there was nothing for me to eat. When it rains, I get wet most of the time. So I freeze. I get cold very easily. Luckily there is the Ritter House to get clothes, showers, and to do my laundry at. I love taking a shower and being clean. I can go to the Homeless Chaplaincy every Tuesday for the Wellness meeting. Then there is a dinner following the meeting. So I get a guaranteed meal every Tuesday night. I feel very lucky to be homeless here in Marin County because there is a lot of people, places, and things to help everybody out. I've been homeless for five years now and it isn't getting any easier. Life is very hard and I just have to deal with it as it comes. I would love to live in a house and be off the streets. But it is impossible right now. I am just really glad that I have all my friends, the Homeless Chaplaincy, and Ritter House to help me. Because if I didn't, I wouldn't know where I would be right now. So thank you to all my friends, the Homeless Chaplaincy, and Ritter House. I love you for it. Patricia Shaeffer
P.S. Since I wrote this article for the Pathfinder Newsletter, I have stayed at the New Beginnings shelter for 35 days. Now I have a wonderful place to live from now til after my son is born. Thanks for everyone that helped me. I appreciate it. |
